Our History
A National Register landmark in the Blue Ridge Mountains since 1912
Lake Toxaway Methodist Church is a simple Gothic Revival-style frame building dating from 1912, overlooking scenic Lake Toxaway in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Transylvania County. Originally called Methodist Episcopal Church South, the building was erected by volunteer Methodist farmers using donated pine lumber and building supplies.
In the late 1800s, James Bowen Hayes and investors from Virginia and the Carolinas purchased large tracts of land across Transylvania and Jackson counties, forming the Toxaway Company. In 1901, J.F. Hayes dammed the Toxaway River, flooding 540 acres of bottom land to create the resort Lake Toxaway — and in doing so, submerged the old Methodist camp meeting site that had served the community for generations.
The present church building, completed in 1912, became the spiritual home for this mountain congregation. The church’s history was researched and written by Jane Zetty in support of its nomination to the National Register of Historic Places, on which it is now proudly listed.
